]]>SECTION 3 PROPOSED CHANGES
Team Championship Format Change
A proposal to change the format of the team championship event from its traditional 6 standard team games format has been recommended by the Section 3 Bowling Committee. The updated format would leave the current qualifying standards in tact (40% regular season winning percentage in either league, class, or overall), but would transition the 1st half of the tournament to serve as a qualifying round. At the conclusion of the qualifying round, the top 4 or 8 (dependent on number of participating teams) would advance to the championship match play round. All non-qualifying teams would be eliminated. Teams in the championship round would be seeded into a single elimination bracket and teams would square off in a best-of-5 baker style match.
Shootout Format Change
The Shootout would be expanded from a 1 day/6 game total pinfall event into a 2-day eliminator style event. All qualifying bowlers would compete on day for 6-games after which the field would be roughly cut in half. Bowlers who make the cut would advance to day 2 carrying over all pinfall. Additional cuts would be made after 9 games with the top 6 earning a spot on the Section 3 composite team.
Shootout Qualifying Change
If approved, bowlers would qualify for the shootout through their league or by achieving a minimum standard average. Boys – 200, Girls 180. Each league will be given a set number of invitations to extend equal to the number of teams in the league. The top player from each league will no longer be given a roster spot on the state composite team and will instead need to qualify for the shootout.
NYS PROPOSED CHANGES
Permit Bowlers to Compete in Multiple Events
A proposal to eliminate a state rule limiting bowlers to competing in only one event at the state championships is being considered. This would potentially allow a bowler to both compete with his/her school team and the section composite team if they qualify for both.
Introduce a Rotating Wild Card Team
A proposal is being considered to allow a rotating wild card team in divisions where an odd number of teams qualify for the state championships (currently all divisions have an odd number). This would eliminate the need for “pacer” teams at the state championships. A scheduled rotation would be established for sections with 10 or more competing schools and Once every 9-10 years, a section would send two teams to the state championship. At present.

]]>Camden’s Division 2 Dominance Continues…
The two-division format for the State Championship made its debut back in 2018. In the 5 years of existence, there’s been only 1 school to take home a Division 2 Girls Championship— Camden. After winning the inaugural event in 2018 and earning a trip to the OnCenter for the State Championship that year, Camden has since rattled off 3 additional D2 championships, winning in 2019, 2020, and now 2022. Thanks to COVID, there was no Championship in 2021.
Camden rolled games of 839 856 756 875 835 782 for a 6 game total of 4943, and edged out Cortland (4895) by a mere 48 pins. The 48 pin final margin was the largest for the day as the teams were basically dead even for much of games 4 through 6. Camden led by just 2 pins after 4 games. Maryssa Parker led Camden with an 1124 six-game series (187 average). Camden will represent Section 3 in the Division 2 State Championship on Friday, March 11th at Strike-N-Spare Lanes.
]]>In Division 2, Camden, Cortland and West Canada are locked in a duell. After 3 games, we’ve had 3 lead changes with Camden (2451) holding slim 13 pin over lead Cortland (2438). West Canada (2292) sits in 3rd place and trails by 159 but is still within striking distance.
Teams have been reseeded and competition got underway at 130pm.
]]>Two-time defending Class A and Division 1 champ RFA, winners of 55 straight regular season matches, will be looking for the 3-peat. They’ll be challenged by a talented trio of teams in Fulton, Liverpool, and Baldwinsville as each team has at least three 190+ average bowlers.
Meanwhile, defending Class B and Division 2 champ Camden looks to continue its reign over Division 2, having won the division every year since its inaugural season in 2018.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased through the Section 3 Athletics website. There will be no cash sales of tickets at the door.
For those attending, a reminder that, despite the recent easing of the NYS mask mandate, NYSPHSAA and NYS DOH still require masks to be worn for indoor scholastic athletic events. Your cooperation is appreciated.
]]>In Division 2, New Hartford left little room for doubt. After rolling an opening game of 943, New Hartford found itself trailing rival Camden by 10 pins but rebounded in game 2, seizing the lead for good with an 1116 team game, the highest team game of the day. New Hartford’s 6122 six game team total (943,1116,1045,1083,1037,898) easily outpaced the field (both Division 1 and 2) en route to both a Class B and Division 2 victory by a jaw dropping 597 pins. New Hartford was led by Micah Shahoud (1303, 217 avg) and Zach Koscielniak (1241, 207 avg).
Central Square outlasts ESM/Baldwinsville to Claim Class A & Division 1 Title
While Division 2 lacked drama with New Hartford amassing a massive lead as the day progressed, that was not the case in Division 1. ESM, Central Square, and Baldwinsville (technically the defending champ from 2020) duked it out over 6 games. ESM jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 1052 opening game. However, both Central Square and Baldwinsville cut into the lead in game 2 and the three teams were never separated by more than 60 pins for the remainder of the day, with Central Square ultimately prevailing. Central Square posted a 6 game pinfall of 5714 (956, 968, 912, 1003, 942, 933) and was led by William Allen (1201, 200 avg) and Jayden Allen (1172, 195 avg). Baldwinsville finished in 2nd with 5668 (-46 pins) and ESM settled into 3rd with a 5666 (-48 pins).
Sherburne takes Class C/D Championship
After leading by a mere 9 pins after Games 1-3, Sherburne opened up the Championship round with 1089 game 4, and held off Cooperstown for Games 5-6 to take home the Class C/D Championship with a 6 game pinfall of 5525 (865, 885, 972, 1089, 870, 844). Sherburne was led by Trace Kane (1190, 198 avg) and Olivia Fehlner (1182, 197 avg)
Both Central Square and New Hartford, having won the Division 1 and Division 2 Championship respectively, will represent Section 3 at the NYS Championships being held in Syracuse at Strike-N-Spare on the weekend of March 11th.
